This is a variation of the Slanting Gobelin Stitch that overlaps the rows of stitching by one square. The effect is of a more closely woven mat.

Instead of overlapping the stitches, try splitting the Gobelin Stitches instead. When you make a new row of stitches, split a stitch on the previous row with your needle, as in the Split Backstitch.
