GRANITO

A Granito makes a little raised dot on the surface of the fabric, used a lot in Madeira embroidery. The goal here is to make a perfect circle.

All you need to do for this stitch is to make several tiny Backstitches in the same two points. As you make more and more Backstitches, the shape puffs up and some of the stitches fall naturally to one side or the other, and eventually you have a raised circle.

Hints:
  • Be careful that the needle uses the same two holes. If you're off by even part of a thread, then the circle won't look neat.
  • It usually takes about 5 Backstitches to make a Granito.
  • As you make each Backstitch, guide it to either side of the first stitch with your thumb.
  • Don't try to stitch a circle that's too big. If it's too big, then the stitches won't fill in the sides of the circle no matter how many Backstitches you make. The stitch will end up as a Granito Oval.
