SURFACE HONEYCOMB STITCH

This stitch is a variation of the Chevron Stitch worked on pleated fabric, similar to the Baby Wave Stitch, but usually worked over a full pleating row.

Work this stitch in three steps. First, stitch a Cable Stitch over two pleats, but pass the needle through both pleats (instead of just the second pleat), exiting the left side of the first pleat, just a little below the start of the stitch. Next, stitch another normal Up Cable Stitch, this time exiting the left side of the second pleat. Third, stitch a Trellis Stitch down to the bottom row, without picking up a new pleat.

This stitch emphasizes the pattern that the pleats make instead of the pattern of the embroidery thread, and is often stitched with the same color as the fabric. It is usually blocked fairly wide, without much elasticity. Because the pleats do not reduce the width of the fabric as much as Geometric Smocking does (they do not control as much fullness), this is a wonderful stitch to use for an adult's garment.

The second row of smocking is usually between rows 3 & 4, so that there is no Trellis Stitch on the top of the pleats between rows 2 & 3. You can stitch between rows 2 & 3; however, to avoid bunching too many Cable Stitches together, eliminate the extra reinforcing Cable Stitch on the side of the smocking that is shared with the next row. In other words, eliminate Step 1 at the bottom of the first row and at the top of the second row.
