The Closed Feather Stitch on plain fabric has the appearance of a ladder with zig-zag rungs. When adapted to smocking, it has the same look.

Unlike regular Feather Stitching in smocking, with this stitch you keep the needle horizontal, still picking up one old pleat and one new one per stitch.
